Programs

Brown/ Trinity Rep's M.F.A in Acting and M.F.A in Directing

Our M.F.A. programs combine in-depth classroom work and an ongoing relationship to a working professional theater. Brown University’s Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies is internationally recognized for the quality of its faculty and instruction. Trinity Rep, with its deep tradition of resident artists, provides powerful artistic assets and creates a firm foundation of real-world experience. Together, the two organizations have produced a model of theater training that is rigorous and technically demanding, offering particular emphasis on training the whole theater artist.

Both courses of study are purposefully constructed to allow actors and directors the ability to acquire, strengthen, and build on skills from each semester to the next.  Our work together is highly collaborative; students will learn together and thrive best when fully immersed in their three-year course of study and production work.  As such, professional leaves are not typically approved for these programs.

Brown/ Trinity Rep includes the M.F.A. programs in Acting and Directing. Students in both disciplines have opportunities to study and work with fellow students from other areas, including the M.F.A. playwrights and the Ph.D. students in Brown’s Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies.

The primary focus in the acting training is in developing technically skilled, versatile actors capable of working in the variety of styles demanded by contemporary theater.
Directors are given the opportunity to develop their own vision, working in collaboration with actors, by creating new work and reimagining existing texts.

By the end of three years, Acting students will be in confident control of their physical and vocal instruments, be experienced in a wide variety of theatrical styles, and have a strong philosophical and experiential understanding of the practice of theater.  Directors will have a powerful personal aesthetic, a solid critical foundation, and a strong working method of approaching the rehearsal process.   Both will have had extensive production experience in Brown/ Trinity Rep productions and with the Resident Company at Trinity Rep.
